Can anyone here explain to me why I don't simply die when I do this: youtube.com/watch?v=_b79RMVEKMgand why I seem to land on a rather large, complete surface in the middle of nowhere?

Hmm. I've heard this talked about, so thanks for getting a video.
I have a couple of ideas. Firstly, perhaps you've just jumped to another legitimate area of the level so fast that the graphics haven't loaded. I'm not sure about the geography or where you could have gone from that location, so that's probably incorrect.
I've also heard it said that the area you reach is in fact the bottom of the bottomless pit where the boulders fall. Apparently you jump straight into it, below the trigger for the death event. Have you tried C-up to see what's above you?
Otherwise, I'm stumped.

EITHER Franklint's right in that you landed in the bottom of the pit...
OR he's partially right in that you've entered an area without the graphics or objects inside loading, most likely as a result of bypassing a loading point. When maps are very large, loading points are used; touching a loading point loads one part of the map and unLoads another... If you bypass a loading point you can enter an area without any textures. Standard terrain is still present but objects and textures aren't. The infamous Chuckya glitch uses a loading point to transform the Chuckya.

Dave agrees with me!
Yayw00t!
Oh, and that's exactly what I meant about that second point. I just couldn't be bothered writing it. So I'm fully right, not partially right :-P.
