I know a vast arsenal of glitches, and I know enough about video game code to explain how they work. So I'll just post the glitches here, alphabetically, by game name. All of these glitches have been confirmed by me. Offshoots of the same type of glitch are in italics
Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow (bugs that work in Yellow are in bold)
Missingno. Glitch
Fly to Viridian City and talk to the old man who needs his coffee in the morning. Say "No" to his question. Watch him catch the Weedle. Fly to Cinnabar Island. Move a rare and desirable item, I.E. Master Ball, Rare Candy, etc. to the 6th slot in your bag. Surf along the right side of the island, so that if you go 1 step left you'll be on land. Go for a while and you'll encounter either Missingno. or ??'M?? or some normal pokemon at level 100+. If you encountered Missingno. or ??'M?? you'll get 128 extra of whatever item was 6th.
The trick works because when you are shown how to catch Weedle, the game has to reset the data for what pokemon appear where. In theory, when you go into a new area, it will simply assign whatever pokemon should be caught there. However, there was some sort of mix-up with the programming and it was made so you could catch pokémon, but the kind was not specified. Now here's where it gets complicated. To change the character's name to OLD MAN, the info for what the real name was had to be changed. So the game dumps the info into the wild pokemon data. Normally, this would be erased when the data is erased, but there's still that one area in Cinnabar where this is not the case. So, the pokémon you see are Missingno. ??'M?? and some pokémon which are a function of your name.
The name trick
An offshoot of the Missingno. glitch. The level 100+ pokémon are not random, but are determined by your name. I recommend the name ??(?D?t if you started with Charmander or ??s?t?D if you started with Bulbasaur. This lets you catch all 3 starters at level 245, and Mewtwo. For a full list of letter corresponds to what, see tasvideos.org/PokemonTricks.html#table_of_pok_mon_id_numbers_
Glitch City
Go to the Safari Zone. Walk out immediately. Leaving early? No. Walk out. Leaving early? No. Save. Hit A+B+Start+Select. You'll see the intro. Hit "continue".* Walk out. Welcome to the Safari Zone. Blah Blah Blah? No.
Walk or bike 500 steps on any route** (not in a town). You'll see PA: Ding Dong and you'll be warped to the Safari Zone building. Walk out and you'll be in "Glitch City". What happens is, the game gets confused as to whether or not you're in the safari zone. It lets you change areas, but ultimately warps you back. When you leave, it sends you to "Door #4" of whatever area. In Fuchsia, that's just the door to the Safari building, but in some areas there is no door #4, sending you to a glitch city.
Mute the Music (My find)
See the asterisk? At that point, walk around in the Safari Zone so that you have 3/500 and you're just in front of the entrance. Go straight down, and you'll see PA: Ding Dong! as you should be talking to the "welcome" guy and you'll be warped. Walk out to Fuchsia and there will be no music. Get on and off the bike and there will be music.
Go through walls (My find)
See the two asterisks in the route for glitch city? At that part, fly to Viridian City. Bike back and forth, saving every once in a while. Time it so you bike over the ledge right as PA: Ding-dong! goes off. When you're in the Safari building, you can walk through walls!
Explanation: The game was programmed in 2 dimensions. To allow going over ledges, the game temporarily allows going through walls. When an event happens while this is allowed, the "allowed-to-go-through-walls" state is maintained. Yay!
The Trainer/Fly glitch
On trainers that can see you from all the way across the screen, it's possible to hit start and fly (Or use Dig, Teleport, or an Escape Rope) away before they fight you. You won't get into any battles until a trainer sees you and walks up to you, in a different area than the one where you used the trick. Then, when you go back to the same area, you'll see the start menu pop up. Hit B, and a pokémon will appear. Theoretically, any pokemon can appear. It's based on the "special" stat of the last pokémon you saw. For a list, see tasvideos.org/PokemonTricks.html#table_of_pok_mon_id_numbers_.
What happens is, the game gets confused because you should be going into a fight, but you're not. So you can't do anything in that area, it thinks. But in another area, it's fair game for a fight. So a fight can start. But when you go back to the "no-fight" area, the game goes "well, SOMETHING's got to happen". So it opens up Start (because that happened before the last fight) and then you fight a wild pokémon. But which? Hmm... The game looks at the "special" stat and "attack modulator" of the last pokémon you saw to determine which pokémon and its level.
Here's the route I use to get Mew.
1. Catch an Abra.
2. Go past Nugget Bridge. Once at the top, go left so you're one step above and one step to the left the big rectangle of water.
3. Save (because it's tricky to get it right)
4. Go down 1 step and quickly press Start.
5. Teleport to Cerulean.
6. Go up, and beat the Youngster with a Slowpoke.
7. Teleport to Cerulean again.
8. Walk up to Nugget Bridge.
9. Cancel the Start Menu that pops up.
10. Catch Mew.
Level 100s
To get level 100 pokémon with this trick, use Growl or a similar attack 6 times against the last pokémon you plan on fighting. Your glitched pokémon will be at level 1 when you see it. For many pokémon, including almost all that have 3 stages of evolution, grow from level 1 to 100 when they gain 50 or less experience. Why? The formula for EXP to next level, for some anyway, is (6L^3/5) - 15L^2 + 100L - 140. Because of the subtraction there, it means that level 1s have - 53.8. Consequentially, when they get less than that much EXP, they still have under 0 EXP, which the game interprets as them have infinity - whatever EXP, sending them to level 100.
Shiny Pokémon
Trade Red Gyarados from G/S/C into R/B/Y. Teach it mimic. Trade back, delete all the attacks except Mimic, trade back. Fight a Ditto and use Mimic. When Ditto transforms again (into Ditto) it will be shiny when caught.
This trick works because the shiny-ness of a pokémon is based on its DVs. A DV is a value that determines how strong the pokémon will be. A pokémon with DVs of all 0 will be much weaker than a similar pokémon with DVs of 15. If all the DVs are 10, though attack can be a few different values, they are shiny. When Ditto transforms, it takes on the DVs of Gyarados and becomes shiny.
River City Ransom
Teleport trick
Only possible on emulators. Press left+right together very fast, as if trying to run in both directions. The game gets confused and lets you go through walls. You can fall through the floor and die when doing this.
It's very hard to explain what happens, but basically because you're running in both directions the game doesn't know where you should be. So it deletes you entirely.
Bunny Hopping trick (My friend FlameGamer's find)
Do a running jump. Just before hitting the ground, kick. You'll kick and bounce off the ground, slowing down. This kick will be extremely powerful - stronger than throwing a trash can.
This works because a flying kick at top speed is powerful, while stationary kicks are meant to be more powerful. When you bunny hop, you slow down a lot but the game thinks you're going at top speed. So you're doing a kick with the power of being stationary, but also a full-speed flying kick.
Trash Can Trick (My find)
Have one guy stand on a trash can. Do a bunny hop kick of it. The trash can moves very quickly across the screen, covering about an entire screen width.
The Other Trash Can Trick (My find)
Throw a trash can at someone, then jump after it. Do a bunny hop kick and if you do it right, the trash can continually bounces between you and the enemy, pwning the enemy.
I'm getting tired of writing and researching this list. I'll add a section on Wario Land 3, Super Mario 64, Tom and Jerry and the Super Mario Bros. series later.
